Connecting theory and practice through service learning strengthens a student academically, personally, and allows students to experience new things. A student is building connections within the community as well as becoming a part of the community. A student is also showing their strengths and learning new skills which he/she can utilize outside of the classroom.

Christopher: I like how you mentioned pride in your response. I think that having pride in what you're doing is a very important part of service learning.

  21. 1.Service, combined with learning, adds value to each and transforms both.” This quote by Jane Kendall perfectly illustrates my feelings towards service learning and the great impact it has on so many people. The "by-products" of service learning are the many new skills that one can learn and carry into their futures.

    2. With my academic field being education, there are many theories that would be beneficial to my profession. One of these theories is the theory of multiple intelligences. This theory was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These eight different intelligences could help me to better understand my students.

The service learning experience will not only connect and offer the unification necessary to achieve anything, but it will also provide adequate exposure to things needed like an academic structure. Psychology is all about mental processes; figuring people out through words and emotions. It doesn't require the physical aspect of service learning but the experience required is tremendous.

  41. Based on your reading, offer a critical analysis of the “by-products” of “connecting theory and practice” through service learning.

I believe that service learning allows a student to recognize the way their classrooms skills can be used to better their community. The community service can provide both those providing the community service as well as those receiving the community service an equal opportunity to benefit from the project. Using the project as a way to understand skills in a way that can be used to improve the human condition. Also students learn about who they are as individuals and what they have to offer the world.

What does “connecting theory and practice” look like in your primary academic field (beyond the service learning model).

In my primary academic field, I must have amnesty and understanding for others and who they are in order to help them solve their problems in life (Psychology). Therefore this "connecting theory and practice" in my academic setting will help me understand what skills I possess in order to better serve those I interact with. I learn why people behave the way they do from a biological and philosophical manner in order to help them function in society.

Chevron Hilliar: I am curious as to what specific skills your academcic setting gives you in order to better your corner of the world.

Tyenell Robinson: I agree with the hands on approach to the theory and practice. This is exactly what it is.
