  1. 1) I donated my time to MLk day , which gave me a chance to give back to others . Me and other dillard students went to city park , where we planted trees and shrubs . I believe we did give something back by building a new park section that is primarily for dogs , but i wish i was more hands on with the community and the people , who desperately need help .

    2) First , it would have to be organized because when you host a volunteering event , one must have proper plans that are thoroughly thought out . My project would be fun and actually feel like an impact of goodness for the community served . Some community service projects are boring and some lose focus of the purpose , at least i know i do . So i would try to host a greta volunteer project that actually is hands on with the community .

    1. During MLK day, I volunteered at the ARC of the GNo. At first, i did not understand what the purpose of sorting out mardi gras. But it was not for volunteers then the center would not be able to pay the mentally challenged individuals who work for the center.

    2. I would organize another event surrounded around mentally challenged individuals. It would be spending time with them. Also, it would focus on bringing awareness to the limited opportunities for mentally challenged individuals.

  3. 1. I recent participated in the Dr. martin luther king day where I have spent mostly of my time helping others who are in need and giving back to the community. and think about the things as us people hope and being able to see what that day is and what it meant.

    2. if i was to organized a community learning service it would inventually be more supportive giving good opporutunity to those who feel that what is need to be done and being able to get every individual involve in what is needed.

    1. In high school, my JROTC peers and I participated in helping out at a town fair. We gave directions, helped with parking spaces, and helped clean up afterwards. I believe our project was successful although we didn't give anything back, we gave a helping hand to those who needed it and had a great time while doing so.

    2. If I were to construct a service project in my home neighborhood, it will be something interesting and fun. Also it would be well organized with a positive and worthwhile purpose.

  5. 1. Well the projects that i did most were with my church and although we focused on community clean up we also extend a hand in fellowship to the members of the surrounding communities we were cleaning up. When compared with the events we do with DU i guess they really cant be compared as they are very different in there goals but i feel that they are both effective in achieving that which the service project is to do.

    2. Well around my neighbor there really isnt much to do, maybe an awareness project or something or a walkathon for a cause. now some other neighborhoods we may need to do community clean ups and different kinds of awareness projects as each community has different needs.

#1) On MLK Day, my group went to Wicker College Prep Elementary School to talk with the underpriveleged students about college, and mentor to them about the qualifications and rewards of being a college student at our particular University. This experience was one of the best, because its effectiveness was high, and the response from the students was overwhelming. I do believe it was a service learning project, because it really gained further knowledge and a broader appriciation of discipline, as well as served the community.

#2) If I were to consruct a service learning project in my own community in California, it would differ completely if I would've constructed one say in the New Orleans community. Every area has different needs, and they all strive for something different. One place may lack resources that another has a surplus of and so forth. So it definetly depends on the specific community that the project would take place in.

  7. 1. In high school, I donated a lot of my time with the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank in Baton Rouge. I believe that this project was helpful in achieving the goals of service learning, because I learned a lot about myself through working with others and helping out the less fortunate. Each trip to the food bank was organized by a sponsor or adult in charge and through helping others, we were able to reflect on our accomplishments, hard work and commitment.
    2. Well I dont know if I could say how doing a project for my community would be different from constructing a project for another community, but Im not a resident elsewhere, and can only speak on behalf of what I know. However, my service learning project would either deal with helping young kids with their school work or organizing some type of after school activity for them, because there are so many kids that I see outside wasting time after school. I would also like to gather up the older adolescents to help the elderly with their errands and housework.

  8. The project that I last assisted in was a tutoring project to help under privileged youth with areas in which have had difficulties. I believe the project was successful because students were able to understand their class work and remember concepts that were taught.
Knowing and understanding the needs of a community is the essential ways to help a group of people accomplish a task.

  9. 1. I am interested in helping people in need.I helped pack boxes of food for families. I helped to give school supplies fo young kids.

    2. I would continue to help children in need. Many parents can't help afford new school supplies for their kids.

Craishan Bridges: I agree. You have to be intersted in the project to care abou what happens in te community.

Alexandria Moore: that is a great idea because they are the future.

    2. If I had to do a community service project in my community it will be something productive and not taking surveies, vote, papers, and any other non-sense that isn't worthy of improve. I will make a good community by building a house, imporve house values, or just clean up the neighorhood.

I agree with Alexandria because of a great point of community service.

I agree with everybody because we all are in title to our own opinions of our community service experience.

  11. 1.) At my church, we conducted a project where we went to the nursing home and delivered fruit as well as assist some of the nurses with simple things such as feeding and clothing the elderly. I think it was very successful. Helping out others in any way, shape or form is always a goal of mine and I am quite sure the goal of others as well.

2.)First and foremost organization would be the key. Also reliable and intelligent/mature people would assist with my event. Most likely my event would involve children so a friendly and lovely person would also be needed.

  12. 1. In high school I was an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Detroit. I spent some afternoons tutoring and mentoring sixth graders at a local middle school. I believe that that activity was successful in achieving the goals of service learning because we were able to positively impact the community and learn a lot of things that will be valuable to our futures.
    2. If I were responsible for constructing a service learning project in my community, I think it would differ from projects in other communities based upon the needs of the different communities are. If education is a huge problem in my community and guns are a huge problem in another one, I think that the service activity should reflect that.

Craishan: I agree that some service projects are more exciting than others. I've had to volunteer on some occasions when I loved it, and others when I've hated it.
Felisha: I like the standards you set with how you would plan out your event.

  13. 1. Whether or not the goal of service learning is achieve is not the big issue. The big issue is how service learning is defined. In my case I feel like the service was effect and served it purpose, I served the community by helping and gained an experience while doing it. But in some cases I believe that it is has you consume the task at hand that makes it achieved.

    2. In my own community I believe it would mean more to me and I would be more prideful. I would be helping my community because its something I want to do, because its where I live and grew to be the person I am. Whereas if it was someone elses community I would just feel good about helping someone else better their community.

1.A past community service project that I participated in MLK Day at Dillard University. At first I was skeptical about doing the prject i signed up for because the project that I was assigned to was cancel. But overall it was a great experience with working with children of all age types telling them about college life and to always stay focus on school and being something in life.

    2. First it has to be organized, and second it will be a very fun service project because I am from a small town and their is never nothing there to do, so it would be fun and exciting for all the kids and teens and giving back to the community is what is most important but goal would be to inspire kids of my community to want to do more service project and have a fun time doing it.

    1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?

Well the community service i did was to help the community and the project was successful because every area was clean and we had no complaints.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?
I would take it more personal because its my community in which i was brought up in so i would tutor students everyday after school and on weekends to help improve test scores of my home community students.

  19. 1. One service learning project I participated in was Make a Difference Day. I was assigned to work with the Salvation Army and we conducted surveys to residents in Algiers. I believe that this project was unsuccessful in achieving the goals of service learning. I say this because we did not provide a service to the community nor did we learn anything.

    2. There would be no difference between a service learning project that I conducted in my community and one that I did in someone else's. I don't believe it would be right for me to work hard in my community but be lacksadaisical in someone else's.

    @ Candace Banks

I didn't think of that type of difference when I thought about helping out someone else's community. I think that in a situation like yours I would probably want to put more effort into helping your community.

    @ Dorian Webster

You are right about different communities having different needs. Some communities may have shelters for abused women and children that can use some extra help while other communities may need help with cleaning up their neighborhood.

    @ Felisha Rideau

Organization is definitely the key to a successful service learning project. An unorganized event only causes frustration and aggravation for the volunteers.

****The last community service project that i participated in was the MLK Day service project. There were many schools out there who participated in this project. As a result each person who participated in this project achieved the goals of service learning and helping others.

2.If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?

****If I was to conduct a service learning project it would differ in many ways by having different age groups and there would be a diverse group. I would make sure that everything is well planned and try to make sure that there wouldn’t be any confusion.

    Discussion Questions

    1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?
Last semester we had to do a service learning project which was to help the Salvation Army do surveys in a local community. The survey was based on asking the community members or residents things that they thought were needed to be put back into their neighborhood. Some of the residents felt like it was a waste of time because they said that almost every month or two there are people walking the neighborhood asking the same questions and nothing ever gets done. I felt like the project was unsuccessful because all we did was ask people questions but we didn’t do nothing for the neighborhood itself.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?
If I was instructed to conduct a service learning project in my home neighborhood, I would say that it would be slightly different from constructing a project for someone else’s community only because my community is very small and most of the lots are empty so there is little to be done but I would still say that the most that we can do in my neighborhood is mow the empty lots and maybe build a playground or park for the kids. Most neighborhoods are big and have a good bit of residents versus my neighborhood.

@Taaler Johnson: i agree with your response to question number 2. because it would be better if you know exactly what needs to be done.

@Alicia Russ: i agree because i think it would be fun to do a service project in an area that you know especially an area that you live in.

  28. 1. A service learning project that I really enjoyed was the Angel Food project. I believe it was successful because we arrived ready to work we completed all of our tasks early and because of that when the cars arrived we were ready to give out the boxes of food. It was nice to see peoples smiling faces when we greeted them.

    2. For me it wouldn't differ, it may be easier to organize being that I am planning something for people I know. But the overall construction of the project wouldn't change because to me if your going to give to someone no matter who it is, the giving will always be the same as long as you are doing it with your heart

    1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?
*One community service project I have done was planting a tree. This was honestly an experience I thought would not have an impact but is the most memorable. We planted for a dance school that was horribly damaged and the woman who owned it was so grateful and was full of tears, which lifted me to know i was apart of that.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?
*The problems that need to be addressed in my community is different than the problems in another.

    @Lisa
That is something I always have seen but never been apart of. one day I will have to do that.

  32. 1.) In the past i did a red beans and rice serive project. We woke up early and made red beansand rice, french bread, and hot sausage. After that we fixed the plates and droves out into the community and gave them out. I also had time to talk to kids about staying in school. This project was very successful, not only did we help feed the less fortunate but we were able to reach out and help them with issues they talked about.

2.) If i was to instruct a serive learning project in my community it would differ from someone elses. I say this because my community does not have alot of teenagers, they are mostly older people that live around me. That being said they're is not as much activity going on in my community, and not many things that are needed, people mostly keep to themselves.

  33. 1.I participated in the MLK day of servie learning and projects on the campus of Xavier in February. I decided that rather than just enjoying the whole day, why not donate my services and help others for one day, so that is what i did. The group i choose would help sort and clean mardi gras beans in preparation for the holiday Mardi Gras. Usually the job is done by people with disabilities but by helping we gave them a day off and also helped to speed the process. The project was succesfully because we helped, and also by helping the mentally challenged individuals get payed as well.

2.My community project would be a hands on exciting yet learning while still helping altogether. That is the problem with many service projects and that is why the outcome of student volunteering is not as great. This way we can all help while still having fun!

  34. 1. I participated in the Tulane survey project and i do not think it was a successful project because i do not feel like i helped anyone in that community by surveying them about how they feel about their community. Although, i do not think project was a success i think it can be made into a success if students come together and raise money to get different things the citizens want in that community. I learned that their were alot of needs that need to be met in that community and that can be changed.

Most recently I was involved in beautifying the the St. Benard's battered women and children's shelter. I loved it because we were giving back to people who really needed our help. If i could change anything about the service activity, I would have chosen to actually talk to the guests of the home.

Completing a service project at home would would be way more personal than me completing one anywhere else. I would probably choose to do something that my family and friends could get involved with. We would do something that we would never forget and that would really help someone.

    2. If I were to conduct a service learning project in my home community, it would differ from constructing a project in someone else's community because I would actually feel as though I am actually helping out. To me, helping my community would give me a sense of satisfaction verses someone's elses community. I would be content knowing that another generation of people would benefit from my contributions to my neighborhood. I would also do hands on activities that would benefit the kids as well as the senior citizens of the community.[something family oriented]

  50. 1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?
One service learning project that will always be prominent in my mind is when I did the NO/AIDS walk in my senior year of high school. That was an experience of a life time. We walked about 2 miles and there were so many people their supporting this cause. The walk started off in a park (cant remember which one) and lead us in a big loop back to the park. There were tables set up with information about STDs, getting tested, making donations etc. This service learning project was a complete success. I learned a lot of information about AIDS and my community.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community? It would be different because I know a lot more about my community than someone else's. I would know more about which type of service learning project to construct because I know what type of people live in my neighborhood. I know what type of audience I would be trying to appeal to.

  51. 1. There was this one time where I attended this charitable event in high school where we helped an organization feed homeless people. I believe that we accomplished our goal which was feeding the less fortunate.

2.It would differ from another community's project by adding my own programs and lectures to help to get a better understanding of what my program is all about.

  52. @alexandria-I think that was an effective yet understanding way to talk to high school teens about safe sex and prevention of STDS.

@CHERVON-I believe that community service at dillard is one of the most charitable events that you can participate in. Its always feels good to help out the less fortunate.

One service project that i did that was like a hour away was no successful at all. We went their to paint a church and clean a park. The park was already clean and they had us paining other people houses.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?
I would have everything prepared before I even got to the place and I would know what is suppose to happen and how it is suppose to happen.

    1. The project that i did was go artound to people's homes ina neighborhood inthe westbank and ask them a few queastions about what type of things do they need in their neighborhood to make it successful. I think that the project wasn't very successful for a few reasons. one because, alot of people didn't answer their doors to take the survey, or alot of peopel didn't want to take it at all. And two, i wanted to do something hands on htat would really help and make a difference in the community like painting a house or planting a garden or feeding the homeless.
    2. It would be no different except, i know what my community needs. I would just need to nknow what the other community needs. And i would do my best to successfully complete both.

  55. 1. Yes, this service project will be successful in achieveing the goals of servivce learining because of the hardwork and dedication im willing to put forth.

    2. If I constructed a service learning project in my home community it would differ from another community because as a resident in the community I would know what the issues are. I would also know the condidition the community is in as well as other factors.

I belong to an organization on Dillard University's campus called S.K.I.R.T.S. Inc., which stands for Sisters Keeping It Real Through Service. Being a member of this organization, I have had many opportunities to service my community, but one that stood out the most was when my sisters and I got a chance to feed the homeless at a shelter. It was very successful and inspirational. If I had to construct a project I would reach out to those less fortunate while making it educational.

  57. 1.On make a difference day our class split up into groups and did different projects such as making snack bags and making a garden building a house and cleaning up the comunity. My group was in charge of cleaning up around the campus which was unsuccessful because after we cleaned up people threw trash back on theground. we then had to dorm storm to collect canned food for the salvation army which was successful in the duals and the gardens one person even wrote a check to donate.

    2. If I were to conduct this same service project in my community and neighborhodd a feel ift would have been an even bigger success because my neighbohood takes pride in its upkeep and not to be racially biast I have mor ewhite people in my commuinity who would participate.

  59. The community service I did was supose to be building houses in the neighborhood. Instead of building houses we walked around with surveys about people houses that was wierd.

I do believe I can conduct a good community service for the simple fact New Oleans needs alot of help.

I participated in the Tulane survey project. I thought that project was irrevelant. i agree with MyyaNarie and Lamegan. It was an unsuccessful project. I also agree with Chardai. The St. Bernard battered women and children's shelter seem like a great project. I wish I would have had the opportunity to participate.

  63. 1. I done Habitats for Humanities and i believe that we made i difference in people lives who have lost their home in Hurricane Katrina. Also, looking at a couple who help work on their home with us was a great experience to know that we had a helping hand in rebuilding someone happiness.

    2. I believe if i was instructed to create a community service in y community it would be easier because i know what should be fixed and need working on as if i go to a different area where i dont know nothing about because differnt areas of places need different helps.

  64. 1.) At my church, we conducted a project where we went to the nursing home and delivered fruit as well as assist some of the nurses with simple things such as feeding and clothing the elderly.

  65. I did a lot of projects here with Dillard. I learned that giving back to the less fortunate can be a heart warming experience.

2.A service learning project in my community would be trying to get local play grounds fixed so kids can pplay and have a good time

  66. 1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?

A service learning project that I have completed in the past has been tutoring young eigth graders every Saturday during my second semester of my Freshmen year. This project was geared at improving the fundamental skills for preparation of eigth grade students. I believe that the goals of this service project were met because we worked well with the younger students and learned a lot about ourselves in the process.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?

Constucting a project for my community would differ because the needs of every community are different. For instance, a program to improve the literacy problem of New Orleans would not be applicable or as needed for a city like Baton Rouge.

    COMMENTS
Garion Eaves: I agree that the community needs must be assessed in order for the project to be effective and meaningful.

Hannah Ingram: I believe that feeding the homeless is a wide spread issue that can be conquered in many different cities. This is a relevant issue that would make a great service learning project.

Kimyana: I believe that different communities could use different projects, therefore I disagree that the same service learning project for your community would work for everyone elses.

  67. The project that I last assisted in was a tutoring project to help under privileged youth with areas in which have had difficulties. I believe the project was successful because students were able to understand their class work and remember concepts that were taught.
Knowing and understanding the needs of a community is the essential ways to help a group of people accomplish a task.

  68. 1. Reflect on a service learning or community service project that you have done in the past. Evaluate whether or not this project was successful in achieving the goals of service learning?***My community service met the goals of service learning. I learned many of the intangible things that can only be learned by action. Therefore, the things I learned through service were very benefical to my future endeavors.

    2. If you were instructed to conduct a service learning project in your home community or neighborhood, how if any would it differ for constructing a project for someone else’s community?***It would differ because I would know exactly what they people would get actively involved in. When a person is on the outside looking in its sometimes harder to connect and actually help people to the fullest. However, if the community knows the character of a person the service would be greater because more assistance and support would be given.
